Hi, I’m Edwin Proper, the founder of Proper Snacks and this is my story (in a nut shell).

In 2015, I started noticing the shocking difference in quality and taste of pecan nuts bought from the store compared to those from our farm situated in Hekpoort, Gauteng.

Then, one freezing 2 am morning on the 9th of April 2015, it hit me like a ton of ‘nuts’. I can improve the freshness if we store them in our cool rooms & crack the nuts on the farm and deliver directly to the end consumer. And so Proper Nuts was born, later changed to Proper Snacks (for reasons I will not dive into).

The PROPER test

I discovered a simple test, which I call 'the proper test' to find which nuts are fresh and which are not.

Tree nuts high in fats such as Pecans, Walnuts and Macadamia's will float in water if they are fresh. While nuts that sink have gone rancid. My theory is that the fats inside the nuts allow the nut to float. Once the nuts are exposed to heat & light they begin to oxidize/break down the fats and thus sink.

Why do our nuts float?

It's simple, we receive our produce directly from the farmer. We store them in cool rooms to avoid them spoiling from heat and light. We package and distribute the produce directly to our customers skipping the middle man and avoiding any produce sitting on a shelf for an extended period of time.


Why eat nuts?

This entertaining short video from the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) explains how a study of 115,00 people over a 30 year period concluded that nut eaters live longer than non-nut eaters and have a lower incidence of death from cancer and cardiovascular disease.
